Yahoo Mail Not Showing Up in Gmail? App Passwords and the End of the Fetcher
If Gmail has stopped collecting your Yahoo mail, or rejects your password when you try to add a Yahoo address under "Check mail from other accounts", there are two separate problems in play. Yahoo will not let an outside app read your mailbox with your normal password, and Google is removing the fetching feature altogether. Both produce the same symptom, a mailbox Gmail quietly stops checking, so it's worth knowing which one you're looking at. This also applies to more addresses than you might think: if your email ends in @frontier.com, @cox.net, or (increasingly) @comcast.net, your mailbox is a Yahoo mailbox now, and everything below applies to you too.
The POP settings
Yahoo's settings for any app that collects mail over POP3:¹

The last row is the one that catches people out. Your normal Yahoo password will not work for POP3, however correctly you type it. Yahoo's docs route every third-party mail app to an app password instead; there is no setting to allow your ordinary password.¹
Generating an app password
Yahoo describes app passwords as "randomly generated codes that let non-Yahoo email apps access your account when they don't use Yahoo's sign-in page".² To make one: sign in at login.yahoo.com, open the Account Security page, find "External connections", and choose "Create app password". Yahoo shows you the code once. Paste it wherever the app asks for your password, and treat it like a password, because that's what it is. You can delete it from the same page later, which locks that app out without affecting anything else.²
If a Gmail fetch that used to work died with a password or authentication error, this is the first thing to check. It usually means the connection was set up back when an ordinary password still worked, and it no longer does.
The other half: Gmail's fetcher is going away
Even with a working app password, the Gmail side has a deadline. Google is removing "Check mail from other accounts", and its support page names Yahoo explicitly: new setups stopped being supported after the first quarter of 2026, and existing users keep the feature until January 2027.³ Treat that date as a ceiling rather than a promise, since connections have been stopping in waves since early 2026. If your Yahoo fetch stopped without any password error, this is probably why, and re-adding the account is no longer possible.
Frontier addresses: same settings, same fix
Frontier email (@frontier.com and @frontiernet.net) has been handled by Yahoo since 20 March 2024.⁴ You sign in at login.yahoo.com with your full Frontier address, generate an app password exactly as above, and use the same POP settings from the table.⁵ Frontier's own help page about the move was refusing connections when I checked this week, so the archived copy is in the sources below.
Comcast, Cox, and the other quietly-Yahoo addresses
Yahoo also runs the mailboxes behind several ISP addresses:
- comcast.net: moving to Yahoo in waves since June 2025. I've covered Comcast separately, because unmigrated mailboxes still use Comcast's own servers and have their own catches.⁶
- cox.net: fully on Yahoo since early 2025. Yahoo's page for Cox addresses is blunt about it: "You must use an app password and not your regular account password."⁷
One family that looks similar but isn't: AT&T addresses (att.net, sbcglobal.net, bellsouth.net and friends). Yahoo runs AT&T's mail platform too, but AT&T keeps its own servers and its own credential, a "secure mail key" generated in your AT&T account rather than a Yahoo app password. Don't follow this post's steps for those addresses.
Keeping Yahoo mail in Gmail
Forwarding is the awkward one here: Yahoo discontinued automatic forwarding for free accounts back in January 2021, so forwarding your Yahoo mail to Gmail needs a paid Mail Plus subscription.⁸ The Gmail mobile app can read the mailbox over IMAP (imap.mail.yahoo.com, port 993, with the same app password), but that mail never appears in the Gmail web inbox. A desktop client like Thunderbird will pull the mailbox across in one go, manually. I've compared all of these in more detail if you want the fuller picture.
The closest replacement for what "Check mail from other accounts" did is to have something sign into the mailbox on a schedule and import the mail into Gmail for you, which is what I built PopRelay to do. You give it the POP settings from the table above and the app password from the walkthrough, pick how often it should check, and it pulls anything new and adds it to your Gmail using the Gmail API. It only ever asks Google for permission to add messages and labels, so it can't read or delete the mail already in your account, and the app password is encrypted before it's stored. A nice property of app passwords generally: you can revoke PopRelay's access from Yahoo's side at any moment by deleting the password. It's from the same people behind 33mail.com, running since 2011.
If that fits, you can set it up in a few minutes. Either way, sort out a replacement before the fetcher's end date reaches your account rather than after your inbox goes quiet.
